Nestled on the serene banks of the sacred confluence (Sangama) of the Kaveri, Kapila, and Sphatika Sarovara, the Gunja Shri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple in Tirumakudalu Narasipura (T. Narasipura) radiates spiritual magnificence. Revered as more sacred than Kashi, this divine abode is often referred to as Manikarnika Gunja Narasimha Kshetra. Lord Narasimha here holds a Gunja seed (Gulaganji)—symbolizing that this kshetra is one seed holier than Kashi’s Manikarnika Tirtha
According to the Skanda Purana, and supported by divine legend, this shrine is equated to or even surpasses the holiness of Kashi. The Lord holds a Gunja seed in His hand, establishing this kshetra’s supreme sanctity. A bath in the sacred Manikarnika Tirtha here at noon is believed to grant liberation (moksha). The Lord is present with Goddess Mahalakshmi seated on His left thigh, offering darshan in a graceful seated posture.
T. Narasipura, literally meaning “Three Rivers and the Abode of Narasimha,” has been worshipped by Brahma in Satya Yuga, Markandeya in Treta Yuga, Jaya-Vijaya in Dwapara Yuga, and now by devotees in Kali Yuga.
Long ago, a humble washerman used to cleanse clothes at the sacred confluence. One night, Lord Narasimha appeared in his dream, directing him to an anthill, which upon sprinkling water revealed the divine vigraha (idol) of Lakshmi Narasimha.
Lacking resources to build a temple, the washerman was again guided by the Lord to unearth a treasure buried beneath his washing stone. With that divine wealth, the temple was constructed.
Desiring salvation, the washerman wished to go to Kashi. But Lord Narasimha blessed him instead, stating this land itself is holier than Kashi—heavier by one Gunja seed in spiritual merit. Since then, Lord Narasimha has held the Gunja seed as proof of this divine comparison.
Mirroring Kashi:
The Gunja Shri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple is not just a temple—it is a tirtha, a spiritual destiny where the Lord offers moksha through love and leela. Whether you're seeking spiritual liberation, peace of mind, or divine grace, this kshetra stands as a living testimony to the Lord’s omnipresence and boundless mercy.
Come, take a dip in the holy waters, stand before the Lord holding a sacred Gunja seed, and leave your worries at His feet.
