Nestled on a serene island-like stretch of the Kaveri River in Shivanasamudra, Madhyaranga Shri Ranganathaswamy Temple is a spiritually significant temple dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, the reclining form of Lord Vishnu. As the name suggests, it is the Madhya (middle) Ranga, one among the sacred triad of Ranganatha temples—Adi Ranga (Srirangapatna), Madhya Ranga (Shivanasamudra), and Antya Ranga (Srirangam)—situated along the sacred flow of the river.
This peaceful temple offers a quiet yet deeply divine experience, away from bustling crowds. The deity currently resides in a temporary shrine outside the main sanctum due to ongoing renovation work, yet the spiritual ambiance remains undisturbed.
The Triranga Darshan—visiting all three Ranganatha temples on the same day—is believed to grant immense Punya (spiritual merit), especially during the auspicious month of Dhanurmasa. Devotees travel here seeking blessings for peace, spiritual awakening, and divine grace.
Despite its modest scale compared to its counterparts, Madhya Ranga exudes a personal and meditative aura, making it a must-visit stop for spiritual seekers and Vaishnavites alike. Regular annadanam (free prasadam lunch) further reflects the temple’s warm hospitality.
This ancient temple is said to be over 1600 years old, originally built during the Chola dynasty, and later enhanced by the Hoysalas, Vijayanagara kings, Mysore Wodeyars, and even Hyder Ali. According to legend, Gautama Maharishi performed penance here, praying to Lord Vishnu to remain at this very site for the benefit of future devotees.
The Lord Ranganatha idol, lovingly referred to as Mohana Ranga or Jaganmohana Ranga, lies majestically in a reclining pose on Adishesha, symbolizing tranquility and cosmic rest. Currently, the main deity has been shifted outside due to temple restoration, which is expected to be completed by 2025
