Shree Vaded Karaviramma Devastan in Katkol is one of the most revered shrines dedicated to Goddess Karaviramma. Katkol itself is unique for being home to four sacred temples of the Goddess—

The temple is located within the remains of an old fort (locally referred to as Vade), giving it a rare heritage value. Even though the fort has mostly fallen over centuries, the temple itself continues to stand firm—like a divine guardian amid time’s passage. Today, the temple has been renovated with white stone, carrying both the essence of antiquity and the freshness of modern care.

For the people of Katkol and nearby villages, Shree Vaded Karaviramma is not just a temple deity—she is their protective Mother, their Grama Devi (village goddess). Generations of devotees testify to her powers: desires expressed before the Devi are believed to be fulfilled with sincerity and devotion.
Festivals such as Dussera and Devi Jatra are celebrated in grandeur, uniting all four Karaveeramma temples of Katkol. During droughts, a special prayer ritual known as Mungaru Krishi(farming) Vara is conducted over five Tuesdays, invoking the Goddess for rain and agricultural prosperity. On every Tuesday and Friday, the temple atmosphere becomes festive, with devotees offering naivedya not only to the Goddess but also to all deities of the village.
In the holy months of Shravana and Karthika, the temple sees larger gatherings, with free prasadam distribution offered to devotees. Rituals such as Navaratri Ghatastapana during Dasara and the final day Banni rituals bring together the entire village community in devotion and joy. For countless families, the temple continues to be the center of cultural and spiritual life.
📜 History
The roots of Shree Vaded Karaviramma Temple stretch back centuries. Oral legends suggest that the temple predates the British era, with locals believing that the idol (swabanu vigraha) has stood within the fort area since ancient times.
During colonial times, the British used the fort (Vade) as their administrative office, similar to today’s district commissioner’s offices. Yet, even they recognized the sanctity of the Devi shrine within. It is said that British officers, along with Indian devotees, sought the Goddess’s blessings before carrying out administrative tasks—a powerful testimony to her spiritual influence.
For generations, the Desai family is remembered for their role in protecting and nurturing the temple. Likewise, the Sunagar family has carried out daily poojas across centuries, preserving unbroken traditions of worship.
Though the fort has mostly collapsed, with only some walls and the entrance surviving, the temple itself has endured. The kalyani (temple tank) in front of the shrine, though now in ruins, still fills with rainwater and reminds devotees of the temple’s heritage. Behind the shrine lies a vast village pond, adding a serene backdrop to the divine setting. Devotees believe that when the time is right, the Goddess herself will bless the complete renovation of the fort and its surroundings.

The temple opens daily at 8:00 AM and remains accessible until 5:00 PM. While the Garbha Gudi (sanctum door) may be closed outside of scheduled rituals, the temple premises are always open for devotees to offer prayers and seek blessings.
