Nestled on the serene banks of the Bhima River, Shri Bhagyavanti Temple stands as a grand spiritual abode dedicated to the powerful Goddess Bhagyavanthi. Revered for her divine grace and miracle-bestowing nature, the Devi attracts thousands of devotees each day, many of whom come to seek blessings for prosperity, fulfillment, and peace. The vast temple premises exude spiritual vibrance and are a hub of unwavering faith and devotion.
Bhagyavanthi/Bhagyyamma Devi is regarded as the "Fortune Giver" (Bhagya Vahini) and is considered equivalent to Kamadhenu and Kalpavriksha by devotees. Worshippers strongly believe that their sincere prayers are always answered here. The temple holds a powerful legacy as the Kuladevi (family deity) of the illustrious Vijayanagara kings and remains a divine center of miracles. The glass pillar that transformed into a sacred black stone remains the prime source of divine energy and attraction.
The temple’s origin is deeply rooted in the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire. Devi Bhagyavanthi, believed to be Goddess Lakshmi in divine form, once resided in Anegundi. Due to King Rama Raya’s arrogance and disregard for divine warnings, the goddess left the kingdom, leading to its downfall. She journeyed through the Thungabhadra and Krishna rivers and finally settled beneath the waters of the Bhima River.
Her divine presence was revealed to a humble shepherd named Jamanna, who heard her voice from beneath the river. Upon prayer, the goddess appeared as a glass pillar, followed by a divine snake. With reverence and faith, villagers carried the pillar to the village, where it transformed into a black stone. Guided by divine dreams and signs, the pillar was first kept at Jamanna’s home and later installed at the residence of the village matriarch, Channamma Gowd, as per Devi’s will. A temple was then built around the sacred pillar, and the village began to flourish spiritually and materially under the goddess’s grace.
