Sri Kshetra Ganagapur holds exceptional significance in the Dattatreya Sampradaya as it is the place where Sri Narasimha Saraswati Swamy, the second incarnation of Lord Dattatreya, resided for 23 years. His presence transformed this village into a powerful spiritual destination. As described in the revered Shree Guru Charitra, the temple fulfills the heartfelt desires of devotees who worship with faith, purity, and devotion. It is believed to be a place where mental, physical, and spiritual disorders are healed, and some even testify to liberation from demonic possession witnessed during special sevas.
Built in the 13th century, the temple and surrounding mutt (monastery) evolved over time to become a spiritual hub. Sri Narasimha Saraswati first meditated near the Sangam (the confluence of rivers Bheema and Amaraja), then moved to the village mutt, and finally traveled to Shrishaila. The sacred Nirguna Padukas are enshrined in the temple, symbolizing the eternal presence of the Guru. Devotees also witness idols of Mahadeva-Parvati, Hanuman, and Naganatha, and the temple complex includes features like Nagara Khane, seven Jagulis for devotees, and two Mahadwaras (entrances from east and west).
On the way from Sangam to the main temple, pilgrims can visit eight sacred tirthas (holy ponds):
