Nestled in the heart of Katkol village, in Ramdurg Taluk, Belagavi District, Shri Kariveeramma Temple is the revered Grama Devi (village guardian goddess) of the region. With unwavering devotion, locals from Katkol and surrounding villages offer their prayers to Devi Kariveeramma, believing in her immense power to fulfill heartfelt wishes and protect their homes and harvests.
The temple is a vibrant hub of village life—no festival or community celebration begins or concludes without first invoking the blessings of the divine mother.
Shri Kariveeramma of Katkol is not just a deity worshipped with devotion—she is lived with reverence. Her temple is a living, breathing sanctum of village faith, where tradition, protection, and motherly love reside. Visiting this temple is a divine encounter with the village’s spiritual protector, who continues to shower her grace on all who surrender with faith.
Shri Kariveeramma is not just a deity; she is the soul of Katkol. Worshipped every Friday with special pooja and alankara, the temple sees large gatherings of devotees, especially women and farmers seeking protection, blessings, and abundant crops.
A deep-rooted spiritual belief prevails that nothing in the village happens against the will of Devi Kariveeramma. Her grace is believed to fulfill any genuine prayer, and those who go against dharma in her presence are said to face consequences—upholding the moral and spiritual fabric of the region.
The temple houses a Swayambhu (self-manifested) murti of Devi Kariveeramma, believed to have appeared in ancient times. According to oral traditions passed down by village elders (hiriyaru), Kariveeramma once traveled to Kolhapur, defeated the demon, and resides there as Goddess Lakshmi, establishing a sacred link between Katkol and Kolhapur. Even today, some rituals are synchronously performed at both temples, symbolizing their divine connection.
An iconic Uras Kamba (wooden sacred pole), also known as Sidi Kamba, stands opposite the temple. Made from a single tree trunk, it is worshipped along with the goddess, especially by farmers who seek bountiful harvests.
