📜History
The legend of Gokarna is deeply rooted in the Ramayana era. According to the Sthala Purana:
- Ravana, the demon king, performed intense penance and received the sacred Atma Linga from Lord Shiva, intended for installation in Lanka.
- Lord Shiva instructed that the Linga should never be placed on the ground, or it would become immovable.
- The divine plan to stop Ravana involved Lord Vishnu, who darkened the skies to simulate dusk, and Lord Ganapati, who appeared as a cowherd boy.
- As Ravana prepared for his evening rituals, he handed the Linga to the boy. Ganapati placed it on the earth, embedding it permanently at Gokarna.
- Enraged, Ravana attempted to uproot it but failed. The place where he caught only the cow's ear (Gokarna) gave the town its name.
- Parts of the Linga scattered across the region — one piece is enshrined at Murudeshwar.
- The name Mahabaleshwar stems from the word Mahabala (great strength), signifying Ravana’s inability to lift the embedded Linga.
Built in the 4th century AD by King Mayurasharma of the Kadamba Dynasty, the temple features white granite architecture, beautiful gopurams, and ancient stone carvings of Lord Shiva.
