Perched atop a sacred hill with 100 steps to ascend, Sri Mailarlingeshwara Temple is a powerful Shaiva kshetra dedicated to Lord Shiva in his fierce warrior form, Mailara. Revered for its divine energy and epic mythological history, this temple stands as a testimony to the triumph of dharma over adharma. Rich in ritual, devotion, and cultural traditions, it draws lakhs of devotees, especially during its grand Jathras (fairs) held during Deepavali and Makara Sankranti.
🪔 Special Rituals & Fairs:
This ancient temple, believed to date back to the 15th century, is rooted in a compelling legend of Shiva’s avatar as Mailara—the destroyer of the demon brothers Mallasura and Manikasura. These asuras, empowered by a boon from Brahma, began tormenting the sages residing on Manichura Hills.
The sages, led by Vishnudeva and Narada, sought protection from Lord Shiva. Answering their prayers, Shiva descended with an army of seven crore Goravas and battled for ten days. Finally, with the help of Veerabhadra and Kanchaveeras, Shiva annihilated the asuras.
Post-battle, Shiva adorned himself with the demons’ remains—intestines as a turban, skulls as bowl, and skin as robe, symbolizing his dominance over ego, fear, and death. Manikasura, realizing his mistake, surrendered to Shiva and was granted redemption by becoming Mailara's vahana (divine mount).
This fierce form of Marthanda Bhairava (Mailara) is worshipped at Mailapur, revered by devotees as a powerful deity who protects righteousness and grants boons to the sincere.
