📜 History
The history of Shri Nuggikeri Hanumantha Temple is deeply rooted in both legend and recorded history. Mythology states that the idol was installed by King Janamejaya of the Mahabharata era to atone for his sins. Centuries later, to protect it from invasions, the sacred idol was hidden within the Nuggikeri Lake.
In a divine revelation, the Lord appeared in a dream, instructing a devotee to retrieve Him. The idol was discovered and re-installed in the 15th century by the revered saint Sri Vyasaraja Tirtha, the Rajguru of Sri Krishnadevaraya's Vijayanagara Empire. Sri Vyasaraja, known for installing 732 Hanuman temples across South India, established this site as a major spiritual center. The temple and its surrounding lands were later entrusted to the Desai family by the Peshwas, and they continue to manage its rituals and administration through a traditional paryaya system to this day. The name "Nuggikeri" itself comes from the Kannada words "nuggu" (to gush) and "keri" (lake), describing the water that gushes from the hillocks to form the lake.

By Road: The temple is easily accessible by road, located just 2 km from the Hubballi-Dharwad bypass on the Dharwad-Kalghatgi Highway.
- From Dharwad City: The temple is about 7-8 km from the city center. From the Tolnaka Bus Stop, you can find frequent buses, shared autos, and tempos heading towards the temple for a minimal fare. Auto-rickshaws are also available for hire.
- From Hubli City: The temple is approximately 20 km from Hubli. Buses and shared vehicles are available from the Hubli bus stand and major junctions.
Local Transport: On Saturdays, special bus services are often arranged due to the high volume of devotees. For the most scenic approach, use the southeast entrance near the lake and enjoy a serene 500-meter walk along the water's edge. For direct access to the main gate, the southern entrances are recommended, though the road can be narrow for larger vehicles. Ample free parking is available for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers
