Shri Veerabhadreshwara Temple - Godachi

Sri Veerabhadreshwar Temple is nestled in the divine village of Godachi, located in Ramdurg Taluk, Belagavi District, in the state of Karnataka. Revered as the Dharmasthala of North Karnataka. it is more than 800 years old—dating back to the 12th century. this sacred shrine draws devotees from near and far. A serene stream named Here Halla, a branch of the sacred Malaprabha river, flows near the temple, blessing the land with purity and calmness.

This temple is considered one of the punyaksetras (holy pilgrimage centers) of the region. Devotees especially visit during Amavasya (New Moon) to seek the divine blessings of Lord Veerabhadra, the fierce and protective form of Lord Shiva.

Historically, the temple was managed by the royal Shinde family of Toragal, and even today, their descendants—though residing in Pune—visit the temple periodically to oversee rituals and arrangements, preserving the heritage of seva (service).

This sacred temple welcomes devotees through not one, not two—but eleven grand entrances, known as Dwara Bagilu. These gateways symbolize the open-hearted grace of Lord Veerabhadra, inviting people from all directions to enter His divine abode.

Such a structure is rare and unique—making this temple one of the few in North Karnataka to have so many entrances. It reflects not just architectural wonder, but also the spiritual inclusiveness of this holy Kshetra.

Devotees visited the temple in large numbers on Amavasya (New Moon) and Pournami (Full Moon) days, drawn by the belief that Lord Veerabhadra always answers sincere prayers on these days.

During the fair, sacred items like Nandi Kolu, Doti, and Shelya arrive from Soudatti’s Yellamma Devi temple. It is said that Lord Veerabhadra and Goddess Yellamma are siblings—this bond is celebrated with devotion and joy.

Every year, during the full moon (pournami) in December, the grand Godachi Jatre is held for five days. This spiritually charged festival begins with:

• Day 1: Rathotsava (Chariot Procession) along with Veeragase Puravanta Processions and Pallaki Utsav
• Day 2-3 : There will be Vishesh poojas and fairs ustava
• Day 5: Laksha Deepotsava – where thousands of devotees light lamps of Harake (vows) in the evening, creating a glowing sea of devotion.

The Jatre is also known as Baluval Kayi Jatre, named after the abundant availability of the unique Baluval Kayi fruit sold here, alongside Karika, Bari Hannu, and Bananas.

A sacred local tradition includes mixing ripe Baluval Kayi with jaggery and letting it sit for a day – the next day, it resembles the beloved Huggi of North Karnataka in taste

During the fair, people arrive in large numbers—cars, tractors, and bullock carts in rows—a vibrant sight of devotion.Cultural programs, especially drama performances by renowned troupes, entertain and spiritually uplift the crowd.

Certain groups also perform the ancient ritual called Igola Seva, an intense spiritual offering carried down from generations for divine blessings.

Anna Prasada (Holy meal) is served daily during the fair and also on Amavasya and Pournami days.
