Nestled in the tranquil village of Virupakshapura in Mulbagal Taluk of Kolar district, Shri Virupaksha Swamy Temple is an ancient marvel dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple stands apart with its rare sanctum that enshrines two Shiva Lingas—the Virupaksha Atma Linga and the Marga-Darsh-Neshwara Linga. It is a spiritually potent site where tradition, mysticism, and nature harmoniously converge. Rich with historical depth and mysterious phenomena, this temple remains a hidden spiritual gem of Karnataka, still untouched by the modern rush.
The Virupaksha Atma Linga is a divine marvel, known to change its color thrice a day—crimson at dawn, white at noon, and a honey hue by dusk—an unexplained phenomenon that continues to mystify scientists and spiritual seekers alike.
The temple is believed to emit powerful radiations from the Atma Linga, especially during sunrise and sunset, which reportedly enhance creativity, memory, and cognitive functions in children.
These energies are said to help improve IQ levels, autism conditions, and even alleviate chronic ailments like cancer and tuberculosis, making the temple a spiritual healing center.
Adjacent to the main sanctum lies the shrine of Goddess Bagalamukhi, whose divine energy is believed to nullify negative vibrations and mental afflictions.
According to legend, Atreya Muni performed penance for decades before the Marga-Darsh-Neshwara Linga. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva bestowed upon him the Virupaksha Atma Linga, which he enshrined in the same sanctum. The temple's origins are traced back over 500 years to the Vijayanagara Empire, with notable contributions from Sri Krishnadevaraya.
The temple showcases grand granite structures, massive compound walls, and a majestic Rajagopuram, although much of it remains unfinished or poorly maintained. Despite its historical richness and spiritual significance, the temple sadly suffers from lack of upkeep and government apathy.
