📜History
Constructed during the early 9th century, the temple is attributed to the Nolamba dynasty and Rashtrakuta emperor Govinda III, with subsequent patronage by the Cholas, Gangas, Hoysalas, and Vijayanagara rulers.
The temple consists of:
- Arunachaleswara Shrine (by Gangas) to the south.
- Bhoga Nandeeshwara Shrine (by Cholas) to the north.
- Uma-Maheshwara Shrine in the center, added later during the post-Vijayanagara era.
The exquisite carvings, including depictions of Shiva-Parvati’s wedding, celestial deities, sages, and Dwarapalakas, reflect the artistic finesse of the Hoysala and Vijayanagara periods.
An inscription of Sambhaji, son of Chhatrapati Shivaji, further enhances its historical importance.
