Nestled in the serene village of Chikka Tirupati in Malur Taluk, Kolar District, this ancient temple dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara is revered as Karnataka’s own “Small Tirupati” (Chikka = Small, Tirupati = sacred hill). Rich in spiritual fervor, divine ambience, and cultural history, this temple attracts thousands of devotees who seek the blessings of Sri Prasanna Venkataramana Swamy and his consort Goddess Alamelumanga (Lakshmi).
Just 45 km from Bengaluru, this divine abode is a calm and spiritually enriching alternative to the bustling pilgrimage to Tirumala.
The temple is also a center for cultural enrichment with regular programs hosted in the Ranga Mantapa.
As per local legend, this sacred place was originally established by Yajeshwara and rebuilt during the reign of King Janamejaya, giving it mythological roots in the Vedic era.
Historically, Chikka Tirupati flourished under the rule of Cholas, Palegars, and various dynasties of Karnataka, including the Gangas, Kadambas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagar Empire, and others. It was once referred to as Kalikeri Tirupati, a name still retained in revenue records.
The temple structure and its significance were further enhanced during the post-Vijayanagara period, with the Kalyana Mantapa, Navaranga, and numerous smaller shrines built for pilgrims and religious gatherings.
