Srirangapatna holds a special place in the Vaishnavite tradition as Adi Ranga—the first among the Pancharanga Kshetras (five sacred temples of Lord Ranganatha along the Cauvery River). Alongside the main deity, devotees are graced with the presence of Boodevi, Sridevi, and a unique seated figure of Goddess Cauvery, symbolizing her plea for divine cleansing from sins carried by the river’s devotees. This temple is a powerful spiritual hub, especially for those undertaking the Pancharanga pilgrimage.
The temple’s origins date back to 894 CE, making it one of the oldest and most historically significant Vaishnavite shrines. With architectural influences from the Hoysala and Vijayanagara dynasties, the temple is fortified with high walls and adorned with finely sculpted mandapas.
The temple was patronized by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, with historical records indicating their deep faith and generous contributions in the form of jewelry and silverware. It is believed that Sage Gautama once performed penance here, further sanctifying the space.
This is also the only Ranganatha Swamy temple where Sri Cauvery Devi is enshrined beside the Lord—her presence a testament to divine intercession and grace.
